Fire History

Fresno County encompasses a wide range of fire environments from the Sierra Nevada foothills to the Sequoia-Kings Canyon wilderness. The 2020 Creek Fire (379,895 acres) was one of the largest in California history, burning through the Sierra National Forest and threatening communities from Shaver Lake to Auberry. The 2021 KNP Complex burned in Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks. Communities along the Sierra Nevada foothills and reservoir corridors face ongoing severe fire risk.

Local Compliance Notes

CAL FIRE Fresno-Kings Unit serves unincorporated SRA areas. Communities along the Highway 168 corridor (Shaver Lake, Huntington Lake, Big Creek), the San Joaquin River foothills, Auberry, Prather, and Clovis foothills face the most significant Zone Zero obligations. Valley floor communities in Fresno generally have limited FHSZ exposure.

Neighborhoods in Zone Zero

High-FHSZ communities in Fresno County include Shaver Lake, Huntington Lake, Big Creek, Auberry, Prather, North Fork, Tollhouse, Squaw Valley, Minkler, Sanger foothills, and Clovis foothills along the Highway 168 and Sierra Nevada corridor.

Local FAQs

Are Shaver Lake and mountain communities above Fresno subject to Zone Zero? Yes — these communities are in Very High FHSZ and the 2020 Creek Fire demonstrated extreme fire risk in this area. Zone Zero compliance is a priority. Contact CAL FIRE Fresno-Kings Unit for Phase 2 timeline information.
