Fire History

Lake County is one of the most repeatedly fire-impacted counties in California. Between 2015 and 2020, the county experienced the Rocky Fire (69,624 acres), Jerusalem Fire, Valley Fire (76,067 acres, which destroyed the town of Middletown), Mendocino Complex, LNU Lightning Complex, and multiple smaller fires. The Valley Fire in 2015 remains one of the most destructive in county history. Lake County's combination of dry oak woodland, annual grasses, and limited road access creates extreme fire risk.

Local Compliance Notes

CAL FIRE Sonoma-Lake-Napa Unit serves Lake County's unincorporated SRA areas. Communities throughout the county face significant Zone Zero obligations given the severe and repeated fire history. Middletown (rebuilding after the 2015 Valley Fire), Clearlake, Clearlake Oaks, Cobb, Kelseyville, and Lakeport foothills should all prioritize early Zone Zero assessment.

Neighborhoods in Zone Zero

High-FHSZ communities in Lake County include Middletown, Cobb, Hidden Valley Lake, Clearlake, Clearlake Oaks, Kelseyville, Nice, Upper Lake, Lakeport foothills, Lucerne, and communities along Highway 29 and the Clear Lake shoreline.

Local FAQs

Is Lake County Zone Zero compliance more urgent given the repeated fire history? Yes. Lake County's repeated fire events in a compressed timeframe (2015-2020) demonstrate that this is not a low-probability risk. Zone Zero compliance is strongly recommended as early as possible.
