Fire History

Mendocino County has endured some of the most severe fire impacts of any California county relative to its size. The 2018 Mendocino Complex (459,123 acres) was the largest fire in California history at the time. The 2020 LNU Lightning Complex burned through the eastern county. The 2021 River Fire burned in the Ukiah Valley. Lake County fires in the neighboring watershed also frequently approach Mendocino's southern border. The county's combination of dry inland terrain and dense Douglas fir forests creates extreme seasonal fire risk.
